Your Keto Questions, Answered

Here are some helpful answers to the most popular keto questions we get asked...

What is the keto diet?

Keto is a high fat, low carb diet that shifts your body into a metabolic state that burns fat instead of carbohydrates for energy, known as ketosis.

How long will it take for my body to get into ketosis?

This will vary depending on how much you exercise, your body type and how strict you are on keto foods. Typically it can take between 2 days to a week. However, there are ways to speed this up, such as intermittent fasting, exercising in the morning before eating, and consuming less than 20g of carbs per day.

What are macros and should I track them?

Macros are short for macronutrients. The 3 main ones are fats, protein and carbohydrates. It’s useful to keep track of your macros to ensure your body stays in ketosis and you get the full benefits of keto. A standard ketogenic diet will consist of the following macros:

  • a high fat intake (60-80%)
  • a moderate protein intake (15-35%)
  • a low carbohydrate intake (5% or less)

Can I go keto if I'm vegan?

Absolutely. While it may seem daunting due to the restriction of many fruits and vegetables. There are also so many tasty and healthy plant-based foods available on the keto diet. These include leafy greens, berries, mushrooms, nuts, seeds and so much more.

What alcohol can I drink on the keto diet?

Try to stay clear of beer, cocktails and most wines, as they are generally very carb-heavy. Instead, opt for liquors such as whiskey, gin, tequila and rum which are completely carb-free. If you can't live without beer or wine, you can find some very dry white wines and light beers you can have in moderation.
